Railway network density makes 43,9 km per 1000 Route network density is 174,3 km per 1000 sq. km, length of hard-surfaced roads is almost by one third more than average in Ural.

Metallurgical, mechanical engineering, metal-working, power energy, construction, agricultural and industrial complexes make the economy basis.

    Ferrous metallurgy

Chelyabinsk region is the leader among the Russian regions in the field of ferrous metallurgy. Metallurgical enterprises of Chelyabinsk region make 26,8 % of All-Russian metal rolling output, 25,9 % of steel and 14,4 % of steel pipes. Ferrous metallurgy is presented by 28 large and medium-sized enterprises. The most essential role among them is played by: Open Joint-Stock Company "Magnitogorsky Metallurgichesky Kombinat (Magnitogorsk Metallurgical Plant)"; Open Joint-Stock Company "Mechel"; Open Joint-Stock Company "Chelyabinsky Electrometallurgichesky Kombinat (Chelyabinsk Electrometallurgical Plant)"; metallurgical plants in Ural mining area (Open Joint-Stock Company "Zlatoustovsky Metallurgichesky Kombinat (Zlatoust Metallurgical Plant)", Open Joint-Stock Company "Ashinsky Metallurgichesky Zavod (Asha Metallurgical Plant)", Open Joint-Stock Company "Kombinat "Magnezit (Magnezit Plant)"(Satka), Open Joint-Stock Company "Satkinsky Chugunno-plavilny zavod (Satka Cast Iron Smelting Plant)"; plants manufacturing pipes, metalware (Open Joint-Stock Company "Chelyabinsky Truboprokatny Zavod (Chelyabinsk Pipe-rolling Plant)", Open Joint-Stock Company "Magnitogorsky Metizno-metallurgichesky Zavod (Magnitogorsk Metalware-metallurgical Plant)", Close Joint-Stock Company "Minyarsky Metizno-metallurgichesky Zavod (Minyar Metalware-metallurgical Plant)".

    Nonferrous metallurgy

Nonferrous metallurgy produces copper, zinc and nickel in the region. Nickel and cobalt are made in Verkhniy Ufaley. Copper is produced at Karabash and Kyshtym plants, zinc is made at Chelyabinsk electrolyte zinc plant. The region nonferrous metallurgy provides 100 % of the Russian manufacture of zinc and an overwhelming part of refined copper output. Nonferrous metallurgy is presented by enterprises of the following groups: ore-dressing manufacture (Open Joint-Stock Company "Aleksandrinskaya Gornorudnaya Kompaniya (Aleksandrinsk Mining Company)", Close Joint-Stock Company "Yuzhuralzoloto"); manufacture of nickel and cobalt (Open Joint-Stock Company "Ufaleynickel"); zinc manufacture (Open Joint-Stock Company "Chelyabinsky Tsinkovy Zavod (Chelyabinsk Zinc Plant)"); copper manufacture (Close Joint-Stock Company "Karabashmed", Close Joint-Stock Company "Kyshtymsky Medeelectrolitny Zavod (Kyshtym Copper-electrolyte Plant)"); electrode manufacture ("Chelyabinsky Electrodny Zavod (Chelyabinsk Electrode Plant)"). The leading role is played by copper, zinc, nickel, electrode manufacture.

    Mechanical engineering and metal working

Mechanical engineering and metal working are among the leading branches of Chelyabinsk region economy. Their specific weight in overall production of industrial product makes 14 %. Machine-building complex is presented by automobile industry (25,3 %), tractor and agricultural industry (14,1 %), machine-tool construction, instrument making, metallurgical, road-building and municipal, electro-technical, and mining mechanical engineering, and also by manufacture of metal structures and products. The leading role is played by heavy mechanical engineering, manufacture of mining-metallurgical equipment, cars, including tram, tractor, lorries, road-building machines, etc.

Fuel industry in the region is presented by coal branch on the basis of Chelyabinsk coal basin of brown coals. The main consumers of coal are thermal power stations and industrial boiler areas (to 80 %), and also public-utility sector and population. Fuel and energy complex includes electric power industry, coal mining, fuel industry, major pipeline transport. Having big power consumption of the basic manufactures in the region, there are still wide prospects for introduction of energy-saving technologies. Major fuel resources consumed in the region are coal (about 50 %) and natural gas (about 40 %). Demand for natural gas and oil products is completely satisfied by their delivery from other regions.

    Building complex

Building complex includes both construction itself and manufacture of building materials, building details and structures. About 2,6 % in gross industrial output of the region falls at this branch, hereat building complex enterprises provide requirements not only of the region, but also of other regions of the country.
